Happiness can be as simple as getting outside for sunshine, fresh air and exercise so make some time over the long weekend to enjoy the great outdoors.
Don’t worry about your workout if you skip the gym or your studio workout this weekend. Many outdoor activities are also good ways to burn calories so all you have to do is focus on having fun.
Here’s a few suggestions of things that you might want to do or try for the first time.
Head to the beach: There is no better way to end the summer than with a day at the beach playing in the waves, walking the shore and playing a little frisbee with a friend. A nice cookout would make it a full day.
Go for a hike: Lace up the sneakers and hit the trails with a friend. Getting out of the city will make it feel almost like a mini-vacation, but if you can’t swing it go for a long city walk to explore new neighborhoods. Either way you can make a day of it by stopping for coffee and lunch along the way or taking a picnic with you.
Join a ride: Many local bike shops and sporting good stores offer organized rides on the weekend. If you don’t have a bike, rent one from the shop. If you really like it, most shops will credit the cost of the rental to the purchase price of the bike. If you don’t like riding, no big deal. You’ll still have gotten a great workout and all the benefits of being outside for the price of the rental.
Pick up a game of tennis: If you don’t belong to a club, go to the public courts and pick up a game. There’s usually someone looking to play. Afterwards head out to a local watering hole to watch the US Open and pick up tips from the pros for your next match.
Head out onto the water: If you’re lucky enough to live close to a lake or the ocean head out onto the water for a little paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing or surfing. Most of the gear can be renting for the day from local shops. If you’re new to the activity you should spring for the lesson too unless you are going with someone who knows what they’re doing.
